Beginnings

Kimar's Charters was started in 1945 by brothers Al & Sonny Kimar (pictured left). We are still in the same location in Shelter Bay today.

In 1967, Al's son Dave took over the fishing operations and is still "on the job" today. Captain Dave has expanded the business over the years by hiring additional captains and adding more charter boats.

In the early days, trips were limited to the Shelter Bay area. Back then the boats were made of wood, had small engines, and low fuel capacities. In 1978, Captain Dave bought a new boat and was then able to venture out to new locations. It was at this time that he began making regular trips to Stannard Rock, the first charter to do so!

In 1992, Captain Dave's son-in-law, Ric O'Neill, obtained his captain's license. Captain Ric has been running a boat ever since. Also in 1992, we began making trips to the Big Reef and now make numerous trips there each year.

Along with our charter fishing we also have a resort on site with accommodations for our fishing crews.  The resort was built by Al and Sonny in the 40s with several original cabins still on site, along with two new cabins built in the 90s.  Check it out here!
